clearly weren't. john mccain said i would have liked to see a little more on outreach and working together. there was not, as i have seen in other inaugural speeches. i want to work with my colleagues. and i'm wondering what you think about this approach and i think that the push-back isn't surprising as much as we're surprised by just how strongly worded it was. >> republicans wasted no time whatsoever rebuking the president and the president, to be fair, this was not a speech about conciliation or compromise and in fact, the clip we heard about a nation of takers, referring to medicare and medicaid and social security, was basically a direct rebuke to congressman paul ryan, who was mitt romney's running mate. so the republicans have lots to bicker with, lots to single out in the president's inauguration speech, including the president didn't write it with the thinking of this is going to be a reach across the aisle type of message. >> yeah, obviously a very clear choice he made. let me play for you what senator tom coburn just said on "morning joe." >> i think he missed some opp

in washington these days, chris. you have john mccain in 2006 saying chuck hagel would make a great secretary of state and then he and lindsay graham are expressing those same doubts. it's all hypocrisy. if barack obama appointed the greatest woman that ever lived to a position, i think half the republican caucus would be against it. but chuck hagel's going to pass. chuck schumer's declaration was crucial. the only way chuck hagel would run into trouble is if there were significant democratic defections and i think chuck schumer is a leader and his statement makes it clear that won't happen. >> there is a new poll out that shows most americans support chuck hagel's nomination even though 33% had no opinion, i think for a defense secretary post. that's a pretty high recognition factor. what do you think's going to happen here? >> well, i agree with the governor. chuck hagel will be confirmed. he has the relations in the senate. i think the support from chuck schumer is -- was key. but i think at the same time, it's fair to raise questions about the comments he's made about israel, ab

military and need for john going insurance and investment to restore democracy in mali and restore development and positive pro inspects moving forward and how you think we can ensure that state and defense are coordinating through africom going forward. >> senator, i appreciate greatly your sustained attention to africa and i think it's going to be viewed as quite prophetic because there will be, i believe, i continuing set of challenges. you mentioned some of them but by no means, we've got boek ka ha ram in nigeria posing the threat of instability in one of the biggest oil producing nations in the world. something very important to our country. we've got other unrest and challenges coming down the west coast of africa, but we also have a success story, at least a hoped for beginning success story in somalia, what did the united states do there. when i became secretary of state, i recommitted american money to the amazon forces. we worked to train the ugandans and worked with and there were no short cuts. we had literally the boots of our american soldiers and boots of american d

themselves or to others. >> what path do you see forward? speaker john boehner has said the senate needs to act first on this gun legislation, but senator harry reid is not going to take the lead, he's going too leave it to others. he's concerned about constituents from more moderate states, more rural states, so how does this get moved forward? >> i did hear senator harry reid's comments that he was going to bring up things only that he could get through the house. i would hope that senator harry reid would bring lettingation to the floor of the senate. i hope speaker boehner will allow some of these measures to come to the floor. in the past he has said he would only bring things to the floor that had a majority of his majority. but just recently, we did see speaker boehner bring the fiscal cliff measure to the floor that didn't have the joerts of his republican support. he also brought the sandy relief aid bill to the floor that didn't have the majority of the republicans, but it did have bipartisan majority support, both on the fiscal cliff issue and the sandy issue. so if the speake

solve problems is having some common ground and working together. in fact, the fiscal cliff, john boehner did something bold. he violated the rule, he put a bill on the floor that could only pass with significant democratic support and we got a good deal of republican support. so i don't make predictions, but i try to do my job. and there's a lot of republicans hearing the same thing in their districts that i heard in mine. and that is, peter, why don't you all get together and get some things done? >> congressman peter welch, let's hope a lot of members of congress hear that instruction. have a good weekend. >> thank you. >>> you know, let's talk a little bit more about the republican conference meeting in virginia. charles krauthammer wrote a piece today calling it a new strategy for the gop. the general rule is from a single house of congress you can resist but you cannot impose. aren't you failing the country, say the insurgents? the answer, the country chose obama, he gets four years. want to save the republic? win the next election. liz, if charles krauthammer recommending t
